At the time of us having Dr. Arif Ashraf as a speaker at our cafe, he was a post-doctoral researcher in the Facette lab here at UMass Amherst. Since then he has accepted a position as an Assistant Professor at Howard University where he just started his own lab! At Howard he is investigating how the cells of a plant work together to make big changes in the plant’s ability to grow, bend, and sense water. This buds off his post-doctoral work, where he was looking at how cellular polarity is involved in asymmetrical cell division and how this effects the plant at large.
